Jacomy Quoted on Khmers Rouges Trial
30 Nov 2011
Emmanuel Jacomy

Shearman & Sterling associate Emmanuel Jacomy was quoted in an article (in French), published on November 22 in the French newspaper Libération, in connection with his representation of 49 Civil parties victims of the Khmers Rouges in the pending trial of senior leaders of the regime before the Extraordinary Chambers of the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC). Between 1.7 and 2.2 million people died under the Democratic Kampuchea regime from 1975 to 1979.

Speaking about the opening of the new phase of the trial (case 2), Jacomy notes that although the trial gives hope to the victims, a number of large-scale crimes committed during the Khmers Rouges regime, including religious persecution and crimes against ethnic minorities, will not be addressed by the Courts at this stage. There is no guarantee that these crimes will ever be judged, he says.

This matter is part of Shearman & Sterling's international pro bono program.
