Practice
John Savage is a partner of Shearman & Sterling, based in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. He also maintains an office in Singapore. John is the deputy leader of the firm’s International Arbitration practice. He has represented governments, corporations and high net worth individuals in over 100 international arbitrations, both institutional and ad hoc, including many corporate, construction and investment treaty disputes. These arbitrations have had a variety of applicable laws, venues and subject matters.
In addition to his work as counsel, John has been appointed as chairman of the tribunal, sole arbitrator and co-arbitrator in ICC, ICSID, LCIA, KLRCA, SIAC and ad hoc arbitrations. He is also a director of the SIAC.
John has been with Shearman & Sterling since 1993 and was elected a partner of the firm in 2000.

Recent Experience
Experience as Counsel
- A US industrial company in an ICC arbitration in London against a Middle Eastern state-owned enterprise, arising out of a wide-ranging joint venture agreement. English law governs and over US$4.5 billion is in dispute.
- A Russian industrial company in an ICC arbitration in Istanbul against a French company, arising out of the opposing party’s failure to close the sale of a business. Over US$70 million is in dispute.
- A multinational consortium of construction contractors in disputes concerning one of the world’s highest profile construction projects.
- A Middle Eastern state-owned company and two of its European affiliates in a US$5 billion ICC arbitration against 12 Asian claimants regarding an oil refining and marketing enterprise in Korea.
- Malaysian Historical Salvors in its successful ICSID action to annul an award made in favour of Malaysia.
- SGS as claimant in its ICSID arbitration against the Republic of the Philippines, resulting in a settlement of CHF 150 million in favour of our client (of CHF 174 million claimed).
- An oil major in an ICC arbitration against one of its Asian business partners. Our client succeeded in obtaining the dismissal of all claims against it and an award of most of its costs.
