Through its affiliation with Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA), Shearman & Sterling attorneys helped a playwright negotiate an important option agreement. Pat Watkins, a client of VLA, co-wrote a stage play, including music and lyrics, and later turned the stage play into a screenplay with another writer. A production company interested in acquiring the media rights to the screenplay approached Pat with an agreement. Shearman & Sterling attorneys reviewed the document and helped negotiate a “fair and equitable” agreement among all parties. Shearman & Sterling's work was featured as a “Success Story of the Month” in VLA's September 2010 newsletter.
