Partner Barney Reynolds (London-Financial Institutions Advisory & Financial Regulatory) wrote an article, “It’s Not Just About ‘Black Swan’ Events,” published on FT.com on June 7. The piece discusses regulations proposed by the European Union and the US to make OTC derivatives a “safer” investment. In the article, Reynolds notes that derivatives are central to the business models of many corporate end users and that onerous costs could put some of them out of business or force a radical change in model. Reynolds maintains that the proposed reforms should be amended with the goal of preserving cost-effective commercial hedging activity by companies, particularly commodity companies, that rely on it for their business.
