Shearman & Sterling's Global Litigation Practice was recognized with an Honorable Mention from The American Lawyer in the publication's fifth biennial Litigation Department of the Year issue. Shearman & Sterling was one of 24 law firms to receive the designation in a competition that included the country’s largest 200 firms.
“Our Litigation Practice, with over 120 lawyers, has enjoyed some extraordinary victories for clients over the past several years,” said Stephen Fishbein, head of the firm's Global Litigation Practice. “We are proud of our litigators' great work and are gratified by The American Lawyer honor.”
The American Lawyer article notes that Shearman & Sterling has been "in the thick of litigation stemming from the economic meltdown, representing the remnants of Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc. in litigation over its merger with Bank of America Corporation and in ERISA class actions." Other financial client victories mentioned were Amaranth International Limited, for which Shearman & Sterling won the dismissal of a class action related to the collapse of the hedge fund, and MF Global Ltd.'s IPO underwriters, for which the firm succeeded in getting a class action dismissed.
Fishbein said that The American Lawyer's Honorable Mention is a “testament to the formidable litigation team the firm has assembled."
