Our Environmental Responsibilities

We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and using all of our resources efficiently. Each of our 20 offices operates an environmental awareness and responsibility program in recognition of the impact our business has on the environment.

On the practice side, our environmental lawyers are actively involved with green building and sustainable development initiatives, including LEED and the new six-part European Union climate and energy legislative package, and regularly advise clients on issues related to climate change and sustainable development.

Our commitment to environmental responsibility is demonstrated by a growing number of achievements, including:
  • Establishing a dedicated Environmental Awareness International Working Group to raise awareness and coordinate and oversee implementation of firm-wide eco-friendly efforts
  • Auditing for greenhouse gas emissions
  • Improving our recycling efforts
  • Increasing the use of double-sided printing
  • Using eco-friendly paper for printers and copiers
  • Switching off lights/monitors when not in use
  • Decreasing the use of paper plates/cups and plastic cutlery
  • Supporting organic, sustainable restaurants and caterers
  • Introducing energy-efficient light bulbs
  • Encouraging employees to unplug BlackBerry and mobile phone chargers when not in use
  • Encouraging employees to use water coolers instead of bottled water

We have also been recognized for our environmental initiatives:
  • We have qualified for the EPA-ABA Law Office Climate Challenge program. Designed by the American Bar Association’s Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources (SEER) and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the program encourages law offices to take simple, practical steps to become better environmental and energy stewards.
  • We have been designated a “Partner in Best Practices for Office Paper Management” based on the firm’s implementation of two out of three best practices identified by the Climate Challenge Program: (1) recycling 90% of discarded mixed office paper; and (2) exclusively using copier paper that is at least 30% post-consumer recycled content.
