Changing Generations
"At the end of the day, whatever a person's religion, race, color, creed, ethnicity or sexual orientation may be, we want them to have a chance to succeed … become a partner … even run this firm. That's the purpose of our global diversity initiative." —Robert C. Treuhold

Supporting young people in achieving academic and professional excellence is an imperative at Shearman & Sterling. Through our administrative summer internship program, we work with a series of exceptional schools and nonprofit organizations to introduce high school students to the legal profession through part-time and summer employment at the firm. The following is a representative list of some of the programs the firm aids:
Thurgood Marshall Summer Law Internship Program: Finding paying jobs in a variety of legal environments for inner-city high school students.
"I Have a Dream" Foundation: Inspiring and motivating junior high school students to achieve the highest level of education, both personally and academically.
Legal Outreach: Working with the New York City Board of Education to provide law-related educational programs for junior high school students from underserved communities.
Prep For Prep: Providing summer jobs for participants in this innovative program that prepares minority students for independent schools.
YES Commission (Mayor's Commission on Youth Empowerment Services): Supplying job training and positions for New York City youth, regardless of income or educational background.
Academy of Finance: Providing summer jobs to high school students enrolled in finance courses, including accounting, economics and securities.
Federation Employment Guidelines Services (FEGS): Giving high school students the opportunity to acquire skills, work habits and attitudes that will lead to greater employability upon graduation.
East New York Family Academy: Assistance in finding summer employment for high school students from low-income neighborhoods. The academy also provides students with rigorous academic and technical training.
The Joseph A. Forgione Development School for Youth (DSY) Program: Training young people, ages 16 to 21, to perform as leaders in corporate environments through a three-month leadership program, one of those being the All Stars Project, Inc.
