Practice
Mr. Murdie is head of our UK investment funds practice. He is one of the leading funds lawyers in Europe and Asia, having practised in the funds markets since the 1970s. He has spent almost all of his career focusing on funds. During the 1970s to 1990s he practised in Hong Kong, where he was generally considered to be the leading funds practitioner in that market. Having returned to the UK, he has worked in the European funds markets since 2000. He joined the firm as Of Counsel in 2005.

Mr. Murdie’s experience of funds is extensive. The focus of his practice is on private funds and particularly in the alternative investments sector, such as infrastructure funds, private equity funds, hedge funds and property funds but he also advises in relation to UCITS funds. His work covers not only the structuring and formation of funds but also ongoing advisory work in relation to the operation of funds and the structuring of investments by and in funds. He acts primarily for the sponsors and managers of funds as well as institutional investors in funds.

Having worked in the investment funds area for over 30 years, Mr. Murdie has been engaged in the formation of a wide range of funds as limited partnerships, open- and closed-ended companies, unit trusts and other similar vehicles. Jurisdictions in which they have been formed include Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Delaware, England, Guernsey, Hong Kong, Jersey, Korea, Luxembourg, Mauritius and Taiwan.

Mr. Murdie has been described as “highly regarded” by The Legal 500 and is named as a recommended investment funds lawyer in the PLC Cross-border Investment Funds Handbook 2009.

• Innisfree Limited on the formation of Innisfree PFI Secondary Fund, a £600.5 million English limited partnership investing in PFI and PPP infrastructure projects in the UK, the EU and North America 
• Innisfree Limited in relation to the negotiation (and subsequent increase) of documentary credit and revolving credit facilities to enable Innisfree PFI Secondary Fund to bridge the construction phase of infrastructure projects and (in the case of assets acquired during the construction phase) to bridge any period before the relevant infrastructure project becomes income-generative for the Fund 
• A major institution in the Middle East on the formation of, and its investment in, a US$500 million private equity and infrastructure fund formed to invest in Kazakhstan and the Caspian region
• Innisfree Limited in the formation of Innifree PFI Continuation Fund, a £350 million English limited partnership investing in PFI and PPP infrastructure projects primarily in the UK 
• A major sovereign wealth fund on the formation of a Guernsey limited partnership through which our client and other investors made a very high profile and significant infrastructure investment in the UK 
• Innisfree Limited in relation to the raising of additional investor commitments for Innisfree M&G PPP LP, a £225 million English limited partnership investing in PFI and PPP infrastructure projects the UK and the Euro zone 
• A fund manager based in Dubai in relation to the formation of a private equity fund investing principally in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region
• A major international corporation based in Europe in relation to a number of irregularities and allegations that arose in relation to the operation of several of the real estate funds in which it or related entities had invested
