Practice
Ben Shorten is a partner in the firm’s London office, where he practices in the area of international project development and finance, with a particular focus on power & water and oil & gas projects. He has advised on a number of Middle East IWPPs and European IPPs, as well as a wide variety of upstream and downstream projects in the oil & gas industry. He has also advised in relation to a number of infrastructure projects, including projects in the real estate sector.

Experience
Power & Water
  • Advising the commercial lenders and Islamic financing institutions on the financing of the US$2.1 billion Al Dur IWPP in Bahrain
  • Advising one of the bidding consortium in relation to the Salalah 2 IWPP in Oman
  • Advising the lenders with respect to Suez Energy International’s US$800 million financing of the Barka 2 IWPP and Al Rusail IPP in Oman
  • Advising the lenders with respect to Suez-Tractebel’s approx US$550 million Sohar IWPP in Oman
  • Advising the lenders with respect to Suez-Tractebel’s approx US$490 million Al Ezzel IPP in Bahrain
  • Advising the lenders with respect to the US$1.6 billion financing of CMS and International Power’s 1500 MW and 100 MIGD Shuweihat S1 IWPP in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
  • Advising AES Corporation in relation to the 820 MW and 40 MIGD IWPP at Ras Laffan, Qatar
  • Advising a Japanese bidder in relation to its bid for the Shuqaiq IWPP in Saudi Arabia
  • Advising InterGen as sponsors in relation to the development and financing of 3 BOO Power Projects in Turkey, with a combined output of approximately 3,800 MW. Also advised InterGen with respect to the sale of their equity interests in these projects between 2003 and 2005
  • Advising the lenders in relation to InterGen’s 790 MW Combined Heat and Power plant located at Rotterdam, the Netherlands
  • Advising the lenders in relation to the 860 MW Power Generation Plant located at Spalding, Lincolnshire, UK
  • Advising one of the bidders in relation to the Abu Dhabi wastewater project in the United Arab Emirates

Oil, Gas and Petrochemicals
  • Advising the lenders in relation to the financing of the US$800 million methanol plant developed by EMethanex, a joint venture of Methanex Corporation of Canada and EChem, the Egyptian national chemical company
  • Advising the government of a state in the Arabian Gulf with respect to the development of a major upstream gas project
  • Advising a major energy company in relation to the proposed development of an LNG project in the EMEA region
  • Advising various affiliates of the government of a state in the Arab Gulf in relation to a number of downstream petrochemicals projects

Infrastructure
  • Advising an investment company in respect of a proposed joint venture relating to a manufacturing facility in the Arabian Gulf
