In the Community

Shearman & Sterling provides pro bono legal service to low income women and many groups and organizations whose mission is to defend women’s rights and empower women across the globe, including work with the following non-profit organizations:

  • Women Advancing Microfinance International—is a global network of and for the advancement of individual women in the microfinance industry.
  • Urgent Action Fund for Women’s Human Rights—is a global women’s fund that protects, strengthens and sustains women’s human rights.
  • Muslim Women’s Institute for Research and Development—is a community service organization, committed to working in the areas of hunger relief, health education, inter-faith work, and the transitional needs of new immigrants.
  • Her Justice (formerly inMotion)—provides free legal help in family law, divorce and immigration to low-income women living in New York City.
  • Sanctuary For Families—is dedicated exclusively to serving domestic violence victims, sex trafficking victims, and their children.
  • MFY Legal Services—provides free legal assistance to residents of New York City on a wide range of civil legal issues, prioritizing services to vulnerable and under-served populations, while simultaneously working to end the root causes of inequities through impact litigation, law reform and policy advocacy.

Our women-focused pro bono representation for low income women clients includes:

  • Representation of women clients in connection with litigation and transactional opportunities regarding immigration work for victims of domestic violence; legal clinics for female artists; and family law matters (adoptions, divorces, and guardianships).
  • Representation of women-focused non-profit organizations in connection with non-profit formation advice; by-law advice and tax exempt status.

Shearman & Sterling works with many community service organizations focused on the advancement of women and girls, including the following:

  • Dress for Success—sponsored clothing drives and fundraisers. Dress for Success is an international non-profit organization that promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing them with professional attire, a network of support and career development tools.
  • Grace Institute—hosted career day for participants, including resume writing workshop and mock interviews. Grace Institute a non-profit organization that provides tuition-free career training and job placement services to economically disadvantaged women throughout New York City. Each year, 300 unemployed women ages 18 and over are trained with the computer and business skills necessary to pursue a fulfilling career and financial independence.
  • Girls on the Run (GOTR)—volunteered at annual GOTR Spring 5K. GOTR is a local non-profit organization that organizes "running clubs" at public schools for girls ages 8-13 with the goal of using the sport of running to encourage the development of healthy living habits and positive body image and self-esteem in young girls.
