Global law firm Shearman & Sterling has announced that New York partner Creighton Condon has been elected as the 15th Senior Partner in the firm's 139-year history. Condon was chosen by his partners to succeed Rohan S. Weerasinghe, recently named General Counsel at Citigroup after a 35-year career with the firm. In addition, New York partner David J. Beveridge has been appointed to a new Global Managing Partner role. The leadership transition will take place on May 4, with Condon beginning a six-year term.
"We have established an exceptional leadership team in Creighton and Dave," said Linda E. Rappaport, a Shearman & Sterling partner who led the firm Policy Committee's election process. "My fellow Policy Committee members and I received valuable feedback and insight from our more than 200 partners around the world, and the partners expressed great confidence that Creighton and Dave can provide the leadership we need in the years to come."
Condon, 56, currently the firm's co-head of global mergers and acquisitions, has been with Shearman & Sterling for 30 years, primarily in New York. He recently completed a three-year assignment as the firm's European Managing Partner, based in London. He has served as a member of the firm's Policy Committee and Senior Leadership Team. A leading M&A lawyer, Condon represents multinational corporations in acquisitions and sales of public and private companies and in joint ventures and regularly provides advice regarding issues of corporate governance and control. His clients have included Cadbury, Citigroup, Fenway Sports Group (owner of the Boston Red Sox and the Liverpool Football Club), Georgia-Pacific, Royal Bank of Scotland, Synthes, Viacom and WebMD. Condon also represents a number of the firm's investment banking clients.
"It is an honor to be elected by my fellow partners to lead Shearman & Sterling," said Condon, who attended the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University School of Law. "This is a great global firm, with a historic past and a bright future, and I look forward to working with Rohan on a smooth leadership transition. In addition, in close partnership with Dave, I plan to ensure that the firm continues to provide the innovative thinking and excellent service that our clients all over the world have come to expect from us."
Beveridge, 51, currently the firm's Americas Managing Partner, has been with Shearman & Sterling for more than 25 years and has also served on the firm's Policy Committee and Senior Leadership Team. He has practiced and held leadership roles in the firm's London and New York offices. A capital markets lawyer with a global reputation, especially in advising on high yield offerings, Beveridge represents both issuers and underwriters in the full spectrum of debt, equity and hybrid security offerings and has extensive experience with cross-border private equity, acquisition financing, and debt restructuring transactions.
"It is an exciting opportunity for me to work closely with Creighton and other firm leaders around the world," said Beveridge, who attended Washington and Jefferson College and the University of Texas School of Law. "We have great clients, superb lawyers and a strong global platform—a winning combination as we move forward."
