Shearman & Sterling Leans In, Expanding Its Long-Time Support for Action around Women’s Issues

20 Mar 2013

Shearman & Sterling has joined the Lean In global community, adding support for this new initiative to its long history of proactive efforts to support and promote women and to create an inclusive culture throughout the firm.

“Shearman & Sterling is leaning in because the leadership and perspectives women bring to our firm, our work, and our clients around the world are essential to our success,” said Creighton Condon, the firm’s Senior Partner. “This effort complements the other initiatives we’ve launched to foster inclusion and nurture talent throughout our organization.”

Condon noted that Shearman & Sterling is supporting the establishment of small Lean In Circles worldwide, and many of the firm’s women are joining. The firm is also supporting Lean In activities on an institutional level, beginning to work with other organizations, including clients, to sponsor local events.

“Lean In already has considerable momentum and support, and we’re very excited to be part of this growing global community,” said Doreen Lilienfeld, a Shearman & Sterling partner and a co-advisor to the firm’s women’s inclusion network—WISER (Women’s Initiative for Success, Excellence and Retention).

Added Jessica Delbaum, a Shearman & Sterling partner and a co-advisor to WISER, “We already do so much to actively support women, including pro bono work advocating for women worldwide and various professional development programs, seminars, conferences and community activities. Leaning in is a natural next step for us.”

Shearman & Sterling’s associate-run WISER inclusion network works with the firm to support and advance the hiring, retention, development and promotion of women lawyers. WISER also provides a forum for discussion regarding women’s issues in the law. With participation throughout many of the firm’s offices worldwide, WISER emphasizes mentorship, professional development and awareness for all lawyers across offices and practice groups. Further, WISER fosters communication among the firm’s women lawyers by hosting a variety of workshops, seminars and other engaging initiatives for them to share their experiences and opportunities within Shearman & Sterling.

“I can see Lean In becoming, like WISER, such an important part of our ongoing efforts within our firm and the legal community, and more broadly with our clients, to actively promote inclusion,” said Anna Brown, the firm’s Director of Global Diversity and Inclusion.

As a firm, Shearman & Sterling has regularly been recognized for women-friendly policies and for the significant leadership role of its women partners. At present, women hold significant roles on the firm’s Executive Group and Policy Committee, as well as serving as heads and deputy heads of many of the firm’s global practice areas. The firm is also a founding partner of The Glass Hammer, an online community for women executives in financial services, law and business and was recognized recently by Women in Law Empowerment Forum with its coveted Gold Standard Certification.

“It is really great to see how our firm’s leadership—women and men—came on board immediately to support Lean In,” said Kristen Hutchens, a Shearman & Sterling associate who chairs the firm’s WISER inclusion network. “I’m not surprised, though, since the firm is very supportive of our women’s and other inclusion networks.”
