Shearman & Sterling Expands Registered Funds and Investment Advisory Practice With Arrival of Partner Jay Baris

8 Jan 2018

Jay Baris joins Shearman & Sterling as a partner in the Investment Funds practice in New York from Morrison & Foerster, where he chaired that firm's investment management practice. Jay is widely recognized for his breadth of experience representing funds and their independent board members, investment advisers, broker-dealers and other financial institutions in all aspects of regulation, compliance and structuring transactions.

Jay’s work with registered funds spans mutual funds, closed-end funds, exchange traded funds (ETFs) and business development companies (BDCs). More recently he has been active with various cryptocurrency projects for both sponsors and investors.

“We are delighted to welcome Jay to the firm,” said Creighton Condon, Shearman & Sterling’s Senior Partner. “His stature and long tenure in the funds and investment adviser community adds significantly to our funds capabilities. Clients want industry knowledge and insight, and Jay adds to our deep bench.”

Jay adds, "After many years of working alongside the funds team at Shearman & Sterling, I am thrilled that we now combine forces. It’s a dynamic group and a dynamic firm.”

Currently chair of the Task Force on Investment Company Use of Derivatives and Leverage of the American Bar Association’s Business Law Section, Jay has previously served as vice chair of the Committee on Federal Regulation and as chair of the Subcommittee on Investment Companies and Investment Advisers.

Jay’s arrival at Shearman & Sterling follows the addition of Andrew (Buddy) Donohue, former Chief of Staff to SEC Chair Mary Jo White and former Director of the SEC’s Division of Investment Management, who joined as Of Counsel in the Investment Funds practice in New York in September 2017. With over 40 years of experience in senior government and private sector roles, Buddy is well known for advising investment fund sponsors, distributors and investors on the full spectrum of transactional, regulatory and compliance matters.
