Daryl Chew


Daryl Chew is a partner in Shearman & Sterling’s International Arbitration Group and the managing partner of the Singapore office. He has advised and represented clients in arbitrations conducted under the ICC, LCIA, HKIAC, SIAC and UNCITRAL Rules, as well as ad hoc proceedings. These involve a wide range of applicable laws and venues, arising from energy, construction, M&A, joint venture and general commercial disputes, as well as matters having an Asian nexus.

Daryl Chew also serves as arbitrator. He has been appointed as presiding arbitrator in SIAC arbitrations, and sole arbitrator in several institutional and ad hoc arbitration proceedings. He serves on the HKIAC List of Arbitrators, KLRCA panel of arbitrators and the SIAC Users Council.

Daryl Chew was recently featured in the inaugural edition of Who’s Who Legal: Arbitration – Future Leaders 2017. The publication, which is based upon an independent survey of general counsel and private practice lawyers worldwide, profiles the foremost practitioners in the global arbitration community aged 45 and under and notes that Daryl Chew’s “work is always precise and his advice is pragmatic, straightforward and shared with conviction”, and that “he is commercial and understands the nuances”.

Prior to joining Shearman & Sterling, Daryl Chew served as a Justices’ Law Clerk at the Supreme Court of Singapore, clerking for the Chief Justice, Justices of Appeal and judges of the High Court.

Arbitration Experience

Recent or pending arbitrations in which Daryl Chew has appeared as counsel include the representation of:

  • The Asian founder and majority shareholder of a NASDAQ listed company as Respondents in an UNCITRAL arbitration administered by the HKIAC in Hong Kong. The dispute arises from a shareholders agreement.  New York law governs.
  • A global asset management company as Claimant in two HKIAC arbitrations in Hong Kong in connection with an investment in China.  Hong Kong law governs.
  • A Swiss listed company and its Belgian affiliate in an SIAC arbitration in Singapore. The dispute arose from a share purchase agreement.  More than US$ 100 million was at stake.
  • A NASDAQ listed company as Respondent in a SIAC arbitration in Singapore brought by former shareholders.  The dispute arose from a Share Purchase Agreement subject to Mauritius law.
