Ben Shorten


Ben Shorten is a partner in the firm’s Singapore office, where he practices in the area of international project development and finance, with a particular focus on power & water and oil & gas projects. He has nearly 20 years of experience advising on financings and project financings, including many awarded “Deal of the Year” by various project finance journals.

Ben is consistently recognised as a leading practitioner in Energy/Projects by Chambers UK and Legal 500 and is ranked as a key individual for Projects & Energy in the Middle East by Chambers Global 2013. Clients comment that Ben is ‘attentive to the needs of the clients’ and is ‘extremely knowledgeable around the project finance space’. More recently, Ben was also awarded the Law 360 MVP 2013 for his work in project finance.

Selected Experience

  • The Dow Chemical Company on the financing of its $20 billion joint venture with Saudi Aramco, Sadara Chemical, which will be the largest petrochemical project ever constructed in a single phase, and the largest project sukuk closed to date. This deal was also awarded “Global Finance Deal of the Year” by American Lawyer Global Legal Awards in 2013
  • A bidding consortium in relation to the Sumsel 9/Sumsel 10 IPPs in Indonesia
  • The Sponsors in relation to an approx 300 MW mine-mouth IPP in Mozambique
  • Mandated lead arrangers with respect to approximately US$1 billion financing of the development of a natural gas field in the Eastern Mediterranean
  • Lenders (including US Ex-Im, K-Sure, commercial lenders and Islamic financing institutions) on the financing of the US$2.1 billion Al Dur IWPP in Bahrain
