Cynthia Urda Kassis is a partner in the Project, Development & Finance group and co‑head of the Mining & Metals group.  Cynthia represents sponsors/borrowers and lenders in project, finance and joint venture transactions worldwide, with extensive experience in the mining, energy and infrastructure industries, including restructurings in such industries.  She consistently ranks as one of the leading project finance lawyers by Chambers & Partners, IFLR 1000 and Legal 500.  She has been named “Dealmaker of the Year” by The American Lawyer for her work on the historic Panama Canal expansion financing and the Quintero LNG project in Chile, “Projects/Energy Lawyer of the Year” by Chambers USA (Women In Law), “MVP in Project Finance” by Law360 and “Latin America Legal Star” by Latin Business Chronicle.  In 2016, she was named “Project Finance Lawyer of the Year” by Who’s Who Legal for the second year in a row.  Who’s Who Legal has also named her among the “most highly regarded individuals in the world” in the field of project finance (where she was named one of the top 10 lawyers in the Americas) and in the field of mining (where she was named one of the top 10 lawyers in North America and the only one among the top 10 based in New York).

Selected Experience

  • Pueblo Viejo:  Represents Pueblo Viejo, a joint venture between Barrick and Goldcorp, in the $1.035 billion project financing for the development of its gold/copper resource in the Dominican Republic (selected as “Americas Mining Deal of the Year” by Project Finance International and “Best Project Finance” by Latin Lawyer)
  • Rosemont Copper:  Represents a group of global export credit agencies, government lenders/insurers and commercial banks as the lenders in the proposed project financing for the Rosemont copper project in Arizona, sponsored by Augusta Resources, KORES and LG
  • Chile LNG:  Represent the mandated lead arrangers in the $1.1 billion project financing for GNL Quintero, a joint venture among ENAP, Endesa, Metrogas and BG, which built a receiving, storage and regasification terminal for liquefied natural gas in Chile (selected as “Oil & Gas Deal of the Year” by Project Finance International and “Latin America Oil & Gas Deal of the Year” by Project Finance)
  • Chaglla Hydro:  Represents  BNDES, the Brazilian Development Bank, in the $1.6 billion project financing for the Chaglla hydroelectric power project in Peru, sponsored by Odebrecht with a financing plan supported by BNDES, IDB, COFIDE and a club of international commercial banks
  • Panama Canal Expansion:  Represents the Panama Canal Authority in the financing of its $5.2 billion expansion program, a financing led by five multilateral/export credit agencies,  CAF, EIB, IDB, IFC and JBIC (selected as “Project Finance Deal of the Year” by Latin Finance and “Project Finance Deal of the Year” by IFLR Americas)
