Mr. Thoma practiced in London with Linklaters & Paines in 1977 and in New York with
Shearman & Sterling in 1978. From 1979 to 1990, Mr. Thoma has been a partner of the law firm Galler Meyer-Landrut Miller.
From 1994 until today Mr. Thoma has served different types of executive positions in the global management of Shearman & Sterling. Since 2008 he is a member of the firm's global Strategy Group and acts as Co-Managing Partner Germany together with Harald Selzner.
He received his Dr. h. c. from the European Business School in Oestrich-Winkel in 2005.
