For a decade now, Shearman & Sterling has helped Indian clients outbound and international clients in India achieve their business goals.  For the last three years, Asia Pacific Legal 500 has named Shearman & Sterling a “Leading Foreign Law Firm in India.”

Our recent India-related experience includes a number of headline transactions and disputes, such as our representation of:

  • Corus in its US$13 billion acquisition by Tata Steel
  • The underwriters in connection with Sterlite Industries Ltd’s proposed US$2 billion IPO and listing of shares on the New York Stock Exchange
  • Tata Tea in its US$677 million acquisition of a 30% interest in Glaceau
  • Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd. in its US$440 million offering of Zero Coupon Convertible Bonds
  • Mittal Steel Company N.V. in its US$4.5 billion acquisition of LNM Holdings N.V., its merger with International Steel Group Inc. and the merger of its subsidiaries, resulting in the world's largest steel company
  • The Indian Hotels Company in its US$170 million acquisition of the Boston Ritz-Carlton Hotel
  • PSEG Global on its acquisition of an equity stake in the US$300 million Tanir Bavi barge-mounted power project in Karnataka
  • A large Indian pharmaceutical company in an LCIA arbitration in London

The firm’s India Practice comprises lawyers who practice in the areas of mergers and acquisitions, capital markets, project development and finance, international arbitration and litigation.  The team is led by Rohan Weerasinghe, the firm’s Senior Partner, and includes several lawyers who are originally from India and other areas of South Asia and hold amongst their qualifications an Indian law degree.  They are fluent in the major languages spoken in India, including Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Punjabi, Urdu and Gujarati.

Given the Indian Government's regulations that do not permit us to advise on Indian law or to open an office in India, the firm maintains strong ties and works closely with top Indian law firms in order to offer effective representation to our clients in India and abroad.  The firm's extensive resources and history assisting clients on the most significant India-related transactions and disputes make Shearman & Sterling a partner of choice for international business in South Asia.
