Shearman & Sterling's International Arbitration lawyers have represented companies, States and State entities in hundreds of international arbitrations, primarily in investment, energy, construction, mergers and acquisitions, and general commercial disputes. These cases were held under more than 90 governing laws and international instruments, in 35 venues and subject to all major international arbitration rules.

We offer clients assistance, representation and advice at all stages of the arbitration process. This includes pre-arbitral negotiations, the conduct of arbitral proceedings, advocacy at trial, and the challenge and enforcement of arbitral awards. We also appear before national courts to prosecute or defend applications for interim measures in support of arbitration, such as injunctions, attachments and orders preserving evidence. Members of our team also act as arbitrators and expert witnesses.

Our 13-partner International Arbitration Group is headed by Emmanuel Gaillard. It includes over 70 fully-dedicated lawyers with a wide variety of professional and cultural backgrounds, operating from our offices in Abu Dhabi, Frankfurt, London, Milan, New York, Paris, San Francisco, Singapore and Washington, DC. They are able to conduct arbitrations in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Chinese and Arabic.

Clients, competitors and leading professional publications have described our practice as as “one of the best on the market,” “at the top of the arbitration tree” and “a fantastic experience for clients,” adding that our team is “sought out by clients that have a great deal to lose or whose problems other law firms have found too intimidating.” Members of our team have been noted for their “range of expertise” and “amazing grasp of the most thorny competency and technical questions,” as well as for their “outstanding sense of diplomacy.”
