Shearman & Sterling established its presence in Italy in 2002, when it first opened its Rome office. Since then, the firm's Italian practice has grown steadily and now Shearman & Sterling's Italian-based lawyers offer dual Italian and US law capability, focusing mainly on private and public mergers and acquisitions, international joint ventures, equity and debt offerings, privatizations and general corporate work. The firm also covers bank finance, acquisition finance, restructuring, leasing and real estate transactions. Furthermore, in 2011 the firm expanded the reach of its International Arbitration practice to Italy through the addition in Milan of a member of our Paris-based team.
Northern Italy is one of the most dynamic economic environments in Europe, accounting for more than 50% of the GDP of the Italian economy. Milan, with its manufacturing, banking and financial, fashion and design industries, is the epicenter of this region and the seat of the Italian stock exchange, making it one of the world's major financial and business centers. In January 2010, Shearman & Sterling expanded its coverage of Italy with the opening of its second Italian office in Milan.
Shearman & Sterling's Italy-based lawyers advised on many of the largest, most complex and most innovative transactions completed in the Italian market in recent years, including various market firsts. The firm advised on many of the largest rights offerings of 2009 and 2010; the first-ever competing public tender offer for units of real estate funds; inbound and outbound acquisitions and joint ventures for listed clients; public reverse mergers between real estate listed companies; and the cross-border merger resulting in the creation of the first listed European Company.
Shearman & Sterling's Milan-based lawyers continue to service the firm's Italian and international clients, working with lawyers in the firm's Rome office as a single, integrated team, as well as with Shearman & Sterling lawyers in the rest of Europe, the Americas and Asia. All resident lawyers are fluent in Italian, and all of our Italian-trained associates hold graduate degrees from law schools in the United States. The Milan office provides clients with local capability combined with the quality, broad experience and talent that clients expect from the global law firm of Shearman & Sterling.
