Practice
Julian is head of the structured finance practice of Shearman & Sterling in London, having joined from the securitisation group at Allen & Overy LLP in May 2005.

Julian has a broad range of securitisation, structured finance and capital markets experience in both the public and private markets and his practice encompasses numerous asset types and structures, including multi-jurisdictional receivables, corporate, acquisition and property financings and re-financings. He is an acknowledged expert in the field of structured property, CMBS and infrastructure finance transactions. In addition, he has worked on a number of “whole business” transactions in the UK, Europe and the Middle East.

Julian also has a significant practice in the corporate trustee arena, advising them, amongst other things, in respect of structured finance, acquisition finance and corporate debt transactions.

Julian has extensive experience in working with the major credit rating agencies and other industry bodies including the European Securitisation Forum, advising on the development of ratings criteria and regulatory initiatives.

He is acknowledged as a leading lawyer by The Legal 500, Chambers UK Guide, Chambers Europe Guide and Legal Experts guide 2007.

  • Advising lenders/arrangers/trustees on infrastructure bond and bank financings in the Middle East, Asia and Caribbean
  • CMBS and capital markets issuances for Newcastle Building Society
  • The issuer in the début public CMBS transaction for the HSBC NEMUS conduit – Nemus II (Arden) Plc
  • The lead managers and arrangers of most of the Canary Wharf property finance transactions (the first of which was the first UK secured loan transaction to be rated AAA by Standard & Poor’s)
  • Citigroup as sole arranger and bookrunner of the £250 million debut CMBS for West Bromwich Building Society
  • CSFB as arranger of the $635 million property finance issuances in France, La Défense II and III
  • CSFB in its debut conduit CMBS transaction, Titan 2004-1 plc
  • Deutsche Bank in relation to its CMBS of the Centro Oberhausen shopping complex in Germany
  • Nomura as lead manager and arranger of the Premier Pub transaction
  • The managers on the Annington financings of Nomura’s PFG group’s interests in the Married Quarters Estates of the UK government and subsequent tap issues
  • The Republic of Finland in all of its social housing loan transactions, Fennica 1-6
  • The arrangers of the Tornator Finance whole business securitisation in Finland (IFLR award winner–Securitisation Deal of the Year 2003)
  • Numerous corporates/arrangers on debt and MTN capital markets issuances


Selected Professional & Business Activities
Regularly contributes to publications, including International Securitisation Report, International Finance Review and International Financial Law Review, Euromoney, Euroweek and other financial journals. Recently co-authored a chapter on infrastructure finance in the Expansion and Diversification in Securitization Yearbook 2007
