Practice

Mr. Readings, a partner of the firm, specialises in UK and EC antitrust law.

He has advised a broad range of clients on merger clearance issues and has represented clients before the European Commission and the UK OFT and Competition Commission.  He has also overseen multi-jurisdictional merger clearance processes in countries throughout the world.  His UK experience includes a number of merger references to the Competition Commission and he has also advised on complex European Commission cases.

Mr. Readings' practice also includes behavioural/contentious work, including cartel investigations by the European Commission and appeals to the Court of First Instance (where he has appeared as an advocate).  He has also advised clients in respect of UK cartel investigations by the OFT, including the first case closed by the OFT using its new powers to accept binding commitments, and market investigations by the Competition Commission.  He is also experienced in enforcement of antitrust rights in the UK courts.

Mr. Readings qualified as a solicitor in 1996 at Lovells and remained there until 2006, becoming a partner in 2004.  Whilst at Lovells, he spent time on secondment to Lazard.  He joined Shearman & Sterling as a partner in February 2006.

  • The Barclay Brothers on their acquisitions of The Telegraph, GUS' home catalogue business and Littlewoods
  • Corus on the sale of its aluminium business
  • CVC and Cinven on the 'bolt-on' acquisition of AssiDoman's paper packaging business
  • Granada on the merger of Granada Rentals and Radio Rentals to form Boxclever
  • Trinity Mirror on its acquisitions of The Racing Post and other titles, and the sale of titles to Johnston Press
  • Doughty Hanson on a range of acquisitions and disposals
  • Guardian Media Group on its proposed acquisition of Regional Independent Media


Behavioural/contentious cases include representation of: 

  • Corus on the European Commission's cartel investigation into the supply of steel tubes
  • Esso on its co-operation with Tesco to offer co-branded petrol stations selling Esso petrol and offering a Tesco convenience store and on distribution arrangements
  • Schering-Plough's animal health division on the Competition Commission's market investigation into the supply of prescription-only medicines
  • Renault on the Competition Commission's market investigation into the supply of new cars
  • BAA on Ryanair's claim before the High Court alleging infringement of Article 82 and the EC Groundhandling Directive
  • Trinity Mirror on issues raised by day-to-day commercial initiatives and relationships given the authorities' concerns about the degree of concentration in the supply of regional newspapers
