Shearman & Sterling International RoundsCase Western Reserve University School of Law (Cleveland, Ohio) has won the 2008 Shearman & Sterling World Championship Jessup Cup. The team competed against Australia’s University of New South Wales in the Jessup Cup’s final round on Saturday, April 12, 2008.
The winning team members included Margaux Day, Patrick Dowd, Brianne Draffin, Zachery Lampell and Alexander Laytin. The second place team members included Derek Wong, Thomas Levi, Brent Michael, Hernan Pintos-Lopez and Rebecca Zaman.
The Championship Round judges included Richard Goldstone, former Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and a Constitutional Court Judge from South Africa; David Crane, former Chief Prosecutor of the Special Court of Sierra Leone and former Inspector General of the US Armed forces; and Lucy Reed, an international arbitration counsel at Freshfields and newly elected President of the American Society of International Law.
The 2008 Shearman & Sterling International Rounds, held April 6–12 in Washington, DC, engaged law students from more than 100 schools in 77 countries and administrative regions around the world. This is the sixth year that Shearman & Sterling has sponsored the International Rounds.

US Northeast Super Regional Rounds
For the fifth year, Shearman & Sterling sponsored the Jessup US Northeast Super Regional Rounds, which took place on February 15-17, 2008 at the firm’s office in New York. The winning schools, Cornell University (winner) and Boston College (runner-up), advanced to the Shearman & Sterling International Rounds, along with the University of Panthéon-Assas, winner of the French National Rounds in Paris.

French National Rounds
For the eighth year, Shearman & Sterling’s Paris office sponsored and hosted the French National Rounds of the Shearman & Sterling Jessup Cup. The French Rounds took place on February 15 and 16, 2008.
For the first time in the history of the Jessup in France, seven universities were competing. The University of Panthéon-Assas (Paris II) won the French Finals and advanced to the International Rounds in Washington, DC. The runner up team was from Robert Schuman University in Strasbourg. Other teams included the University Panthéon-Sorbonne (Paris I), University of Rennes, University of Poitiers, University of Aix-Marseille III, and University of Paris X.
The French Championship Round Bench was composed of Judge Gilbert Guillaume, former Judge and President of the International Court of Justice, Michael O'Boyle, Deputy Registrar at the European Court of Human Rights, and David Ruzié, emeritus Professor of International Law at the University of Paris V René Descartes. Over 25 judges participated in the preliminary rounds, including Todd Wetmore, Mark McNeill, Tania Steenkamp and Dany Khayat, attorneys in Shearman & Sterling’s International Arbitration group.
This year again, Partner Yas Banifatemi, leader of the firm’s Public International Law Practice and member of the International Arbitration Group, supervised the organization of the French National Rounds.
