University College London Negotiation Competition
Shearman & Sterling is the sponsor of the annual University College London Negotiation Competition. Held during January and February each year, the competition provides undergraduate law students with the opportunity to hone their commercial negotiation skills in an informal environment while competing with their peers. The goal of the competition is to help students gain an understanding of how to best promote and protect the interests of clients and to develop their professional skills.
The scenarios used in the competition are written by legal staff at Shearman & Sterling, and judged each week by members of the recruitment team and UK track trainees. Winners of the popular competition are awarded a cash prize and lunch with a partner from the London office.
University of Oxford Moot Court
Shearman & Sterling is the official sponsor of an annual mooting competition at the University of Oxford, hosted by St Catharine's College. All law students from the university are invited to participate, with twelve mooting pairs selected following an application process.
Partners and senior lawyers from the firm judge the quarter and semi-finals, while the Grand Final is judged by a senior judge from the English Court of Appeal or High Court. In 2011, the final was judged by Mr Justice David Steel, and in 2012, by the Right Honorable Lord Dyson.
