2006 Deal of the Year – Corporate Finance
Latin Lawyer magazine has named the US$18 billion financing of Brazil’s Companhia Vale do Rio Doce's (CVRD) acquisition of Canada’s Inco Ltd. as the “2006 Deal of the Year” in the category of corporate finance. The acquisition, which was financed in a two-month period and included several record-breaking transactions, created the world's second-largest diversified mining company, with leading global market positions in iron ore, pellets, nickel, bauxite, alumina, manganese and ferroalloys. Shearman & Sterling represented Credit Suisse Securities (USA) LLC, UBS Securities LLC, ABN AMRO Bank N.V. and Santander Investment Securities Inc. as joint bookrunners, joint lead arrangers, co-syndication agents and co-documentation agents for the deal. Shearman & Sterling also represented Credit Suisse Securities and UBS Securities as financial advisors to CVRD in its tender offer to acquire the remaining shares of Inco Ltd.
