Associate Initiatives

M&A Practice Group Rotation Programme

The firm operates an M&A Practice Group Rotation Programme across its European network of offices, which is potentially open to all M&A associates with at least 18 months' pqe and reasonable fluency in the relevant European language.

The majority of the deals undertaken by the M&A practice group involve some cross border elements and, by necessity, involve frequent liaison with colleagues in other offices.  Therefore we believe our associates should forge enduring relationships with their colleagues in the firm's other offices from a very early stage in their career.

We believe that associates work better together and form stronger, more meaningful relationships when they know one another and have the opportunity to work in the same office together.  This means that by the time our associates reach Counsel or Partner level, they already have important and valuable contacts in place and between them can take full advantage of any new business opportunities.

Currently, associates can rotate to any of the firm's European offices for 3 to 6 months at a time but we are keen to expand the programme and we hope to send associates to New York in the near future.

European Finance Foundation Course (in conjunction with the College of Law)

Background

Shearman & Sterling LLP is known for its excellence in all areas of commercial and financial activity.  The firm's broad range of expertise and unparalleled international presence is due, in no small part, to the quality of its people and the highest standards of development provided for its lawyers.

Training and continuing professional development is an important part of the firm's success and it is critical that we look to offer the best training for our associates throughout their career with Shearman & Sterling LLP.

To maintain our excellence and expertise in the areas of finance and commerce, we provide our junior lawyers with a carefully structured foundation course, covering the key areas of banking and finance law.  The foundation course also provides our more senior lawyers with the opportunity to refresh their knowledge in a number of areas.

Aims, objectives and management of the course

The purpose of the foundation course is to provide all of our European Finance, Project Development & Finance and M&A associates with between 0 and 3 years' PQE, with a basic understanding of banking and finance law.

The course is run by the firm in conjunction with the College of Law and on successful completion of the course, all associates are accredited with a diploma from the College of Law (in addition to the CPD points they earn by attending the sessions).

Our Professional Development and Training team facilitate and coordinate the running of the course.  They liaise closely with our partners and the College of Law to ensure that the quality and content of the course remain high and relevant to our associates.

Specifically, the objectives of the foundation course are to ensure our junior associates understand (and can advise on);

  • Consideration;
  • Taking Security;
  • Corporate Loan Facilities;
  • Corporate Insolvency;
  • Acquisition Overview;
  • Introduction to Private Equity;
