Long before opening our Rome office in 2002, Shearman & Sterling had been a leading international firm in the Italian market. During the 1990s, we worked on many of Italy's privatizations and initial public offerings, with our lawyers regularly making their way to Italy from London, Paris and beyond. As increasing numbers of international deals started to be run directly from Italy, it became clear that our clients were looking to us to provide local advice from a permanent base in the country.

Our Rome office has grown steadily since its opening and in January 2010 the firm expanded its coverage of Italy with the opening of the second office in Milan. Shearman & Sterling's Italy-based lawyers offer dual Italian and US law capability and focus mainly on private and public mergers and acquisitions, international joint ventures, equity and debt offerings, privatizations and general corporate work. The firm also handles bank finance, acquisition finance, restructuring, leasing and real estate transactions. Furthermore, in 2011 the firm expanded the reach of its International Arbitration practice to Italy through the addition in Milan of a member of our Paris-based team.

Shearman & Sterling’s Italy-based lawyers advised on many of the largest, most complex and most innovative transactions completed in the Italian market in recent years, including various market firsts. The firm advised on many of the largest rights offerings of 2009 and 2010; the first-ever competing public tender offer for units of real estate funds; inbound and outbound acquisitions and joint ventures for listed clients; public reverse mergers between real estate listed companies; the cross-border merger resulting in the creation of the first listed European Company, and numerous restructuring of bonds sold to Italian investors by sovereign and corporate Latin American issuers.

Shearman & Sterling's Rome-based lawyers service the firm's Italian and international clients, working with lawyers in the firm's Milan office as a single, integrated team, as well as with Shearman & Sterling lawyers in the rest of Europe, the Americas and Asia. All resident lawyers are fluent in Italian, and all of our Italian-trained associates hold graduate degrees from law schools in the United States. The Rome office provides clients with local capability combined with the quality, broad experience and talent that clients expect from the global law firm of Shearman & Sterling.
