In 2004 Shearman & Sterling opened an office in São Paulo.  This step was a natural extension of our long and active history in Brazil, which began in the 1920s and intensified in the 1980s when we represented the creditor banks in the restructuring of Brazil's external debt.  In the early 1990s, we represented the first Brazilian company to register an IPO with the US Securities and Exchange Commission and have since played a vital role in some of the most important capital formation transactions in Brazil.    

Our presence in Brazil brings the firm into closer contact with many Brazilian clients and provides a local base to assist the increasing number of foreign investors and participants in the Brazilian markets with all areas of corporate law, including capital markets, mergers and acquisitions, and finance.  The São Paulo office has an experienced team of lawyers with international backgrounds and fluency in English, Portuguese and Spanish and who are qualified to practice US law in the Brazilian market.
