Arbitration As a Means of Effective Remedy for Human Rights Abuses at Sea

  • Webinar

Associate Sandrina Antohi (Paris-International Arbitration) spoke at the African Academy of International Law Practise (AAILP) Colloquium “Evolution and Adaptation of International Law and Human Rights in Africa” on March 19, 2021.

Sandrina gave her thoughts on “Arbitration As a Means of Effective Remedy for Human Rights Abuses at Sea”, addressing the difficulties of enforcing human rights at sea, why arbitration is a promising tool to curb impunity, and the way forward in the development of this innovative project.

Shearman & Sterling’s international arbitration practice and the UK-based charity Human Rights at Sea have been collaborating on the Human Rights at Sea Arbitration Initiative since 2019. The Initiative recently entered a new phase of work, with development of the foundational documents and key building blocks needed to create an arbitration-based mechanism to address human rights abuses occurring at sea.
