Edwards Featured in ‘Movers & Shakers’ Column on The Glass Hammer

Shearman & Sterling’s Barbara Edwards, a New York-based counsel in the Finance Group, was featured in a recent "Movers & Shakers" column in The Glass Hammer, an online community designed for women executives in financial services, law and business. The profile recounts her career path, including the important role of mentoring.

The column notes that Edwards has had the opportunity to work with a who’s who of international clients, including IntercontinentalExchange Group, Inc. (ICE), the leading global network of exchanges and clearing houses. The firm has advised ICE for several years, including on last year’s $11 billion acquisition of NYSE Euronext, a deal on which Edwards played a significant part.

Edwards takes great pride in having mentored many associates throughout her career. “Investing in people makes my work so vibrant, but I have to be intentional in how I approach it,” she said. “It’s important to make sure the help you provide is translating to both professional and personal growth.” Edwards is also very active in pro bono matters, working with women—often minority women—on initiatives related to economic empowerment.

As a leader, Edwards believes it is important to treat others the way you would like to be treated when making tough and unpopular decisions. “There will be times where you have to make decisions that have unpleasant consequences,” she maintained, “but it’s all in the way that you approach it. Treating people with respect is paramount and it is the code by which I lead.”
