Firm Wins Five IFLR Europe Awards

Shearman & Sterling received five major awards—including “Most Innovative US Law Firm in Europe” and “Financial Regulation Team of the Year”—at the recent IFLR (International Finance Law Review) Europe awards in London.

This is the third time that the firm has won the Most Innovative US Law Firm in Europe trophy since the award was introduced in 2009—winning it that year and again in 2010.

The win for Financial Regulation Team of the Year cited the firm’s involvement in the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) acquisition of NYSE Euronext and ICE's clearing transition from NYSE Liffe, as well as the Co-operative Bank recapitalization and Citi Securities and Fund Services' acquisition of ING's custody and securities services businesses in Eastern Europe, led by partners Barney Reynolds and Thomas Donegan.

Other awards included:

  • High Yield Deal of the Year for Emma Delta Finance's high yield offering.
  • Private Equity Deal of the Year for GE'S $4.3 billion acquisition from Cinven of Avio's aviation business led by partners Fabio Fauceglia and Laurence Levy.
  • Rising Star, a new category that recognizes associates working on the year's headline deals, won by Simon Little, London M&A.

In commentary in the “Book of the Night” at the ceremony, IFLR said, “Shearman & Sterling has come back with a bang this year, advising on standout deals spanning capital markets, private equity, M&A and restructuring. This included the key role advising Liberty Global in its $23.3 billion takeover of Virgin Media.”
