Shearman & Sterling Launches Antitrust Practice in Italy With Hire of Paolisa Nebbia

Paolisa (Paola) Nebbia has joined Shearman & Sterling’s Rome office as counsel to develop its Italian competition practice.  Operating from Rome, Milan and Brussels, the practice will advise on contentious and non-contentious domestic Italian - and EU - competition law.

Before joining Shearman & Sterling, Paolisa acquired extensive experience working at the Directorate General for Competition of the European Commission in Brussels and at the Italian Competition Authority (Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato) in Rome. She has in-depth knowledge of the workings and dynamics of public enforcement and has handled several complex and high-profile cases.  Her experience spans across several sectors, ranging from media to consumer products, e-commerce to sports, and collective rights management to Services of General Economic Interest.  Paolisa is a dual-qualified lawyer in Italy and England & Wales.  She has held academic appointments in competition law and EU law at several UK universities, is a former Law Fellow of St. Hilda’s College, University of Oxford, and is currently a visiting professor at the World Intellectual Property Organisation.

“We are very pleased that Paolisa has decided to join our firm,” said Domenico Fanuele, managing partner of Shearman & Sterling’s Italian offices. He continued, “Shearman & Sterling is building an Italian competition law practice to better support our corporate and banking clients active on the Italian market. This will also allow us to compete for work with a robust Italian competition law angle. Specifically, we will be able to directly advise clients on compliance issues, merger filings and competition investigations by the Italian Competition Authority and represent clients in any related litigation.”

“I am very excited about this opportunity,” commented Paolisa. “Joining the Shearman & Sterling competition law practice means, for me, becoming a member of one of the world’s top practices. In addition, developing the Italian competition practice will be a great opportunity to add another string to Shearman & Sterling’s bow in Italy: the Italian team already distinguishes itself by providing highly qualified and sophisticated assistance to financial institutions and corporate clients, and I am keen and honored to be part of their strategy to build on the offerings of the Italian practice."
