On October 23, Shearman & Sterling was honored at the 2017 City Bar Justice Center’s Jeremy G. Epstein Awards for Outstanding Pro Bono Service in recognition of the firm’s dedicated service to Ted Herring in his death penalty case. Shearman & Sterling’s 35-year representation culminated in the Florida Supreme Court’s ruling this year that Mr. Herring’s death sentence was unconstitutional.

Shearman & Sterling Litigation partners Alan Goudiss and Adam Hakki, who have represented Mr. Herring throughout their careers, were the keynote speakers at the event and discussed the history of the case (including the involvement of nearly 200 Shearman & Sterling professionals), Mr. Epstein’s legacy and the importance of pro bono service.

The late Jeremy Epstein, for whom the award is named, was a former Shearman & Sterling partner and head of the firm’s Litigation practice. He originated the firm’s representation of Ted Herring in the early 1980s and, along with Messrs. Goudiss and Hakki, represented Herring at the evidentiary hearing at which Herring’s intellectual disability was successfully established. Many distinguished firm alumni attended the event, including lawyers who were involved in the Herring case over the years.
