India Business Law Journal Names Shearman & Sterling Among Top 15 Foreign Law Firms For India-Related Work

Shearman & Sterling has once again been recognized as one of the “Top 15 Foreign Law Firms” for India-related work in 2020 by India Business Law Journal (IBLJ). This is the 12th consecutive year that IBLJ has included the firm in its top ranking and is a strong endorsement of our market leading India practice.

IBLJ noted that “Shearman & Sterling is regularly at the forefront of complicated transactions with an Indian angle, frequently luring in blue-chip clients such as Aditya Birla Group, Reliance Industries, Sun Pharmaceuticals and Essar. It has a clear strategy focused on targeting private equity firms, as well as Indian companies and multinationals. The firm concentrates on specialist sectors [and its] dedicated India practice is led from Singapore.”

Notably, IBLJ sited the firm’s work for Greenko Energy Holdings and Greenko Solar (Mauritius) in its $1.035 billion bond offering, ArcelorMittal in its $1 billion acquisition of Essar Steel via its joint venture with Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Corp and Etihad in the restructuring of its investment in Jet Airways. The firm also recently received two “Deals of the Year 2019” awards from IBLJ in its December 2019/January 2020 edition for representing Etihad and Greenko in the aforementioned matters.

Now in its 14th year, the IBLJ report drew on an analysis of law firms that have documented deals and matters with an Indian element in the past 12 months. The results were based on extensive research, deep editorial experience and wide consultation with India-focused corporate counsel around the world as well as partners at both Indian and International law firms.

The awards have been featured in the IBLJ’s special report titled “A cut above the rest.”
