Alexander Marcopoulos Named as Advisory Board Member of Human Rights at Sea

Counsel Alexander Marcopoulos was named as Advisory Board Member of Human Rights at Sea (HRAS)

HRAS is a UK-based charity that aims to promote and develop more effective human rights protection for seafarers, fishers, migrants, refugees and others working or living in the littoral and maritime space globally.

In addition, Alexander is leading the Shearman & Sterling team working with HRAS to develop Human Rights at Sea Arbitration, an innovative approach that aims to provide victims of human rights abuse at sea with access an effective remedy while combating the impunity enjoyed by human rights abusers.

Shearman & Sterling’s international arbitration practice and HRAS have been collaborating on the Human Rights at Sea Arbitration Initiative for over one year now. The Initiative recently entered a new phase of work, with development of the foundational documents and key building blocks needed to create an arbitration-based mechanism to address human rights abuses occurring at sea
