The article “The ‘WeChat Effect’: Understanding the Compliance Risks of Mobile Messaging Apps,” authored by partner Brian Burke and Of Counsel Danforth Newcomb (both New York-Litigation) and associate Caitrin McKiernan (Hong Kong-Litigation), was published in the February 2019 issue of Financier Worldwide. The article explains how the use of instant messaging apps such as WeChat, WhatsApp and QQ for business correspondence opens the door to serious compliance and regulatory risks, many of which have never been encountered previously. It also discusses the views of U.S. regulators and explores practical ways that companies might mitigate these risks.
