Shearman & Sterling has announced the appointment of Richard Hsu as global leader of the firm’s Intellectual Property Transactions practice.

A partner in the firm’s Palo Alto and New York offices, Hsu has more than 20 years of experience advising companies on corporate, licensing and associated business and intellectual property issues. He has extensive experience in structuring and negotiating corporate and technology transactions, including acquisitions, asset purchase, licensing, development and other partnering agreements for the life science, semiconductor, medical device, electronics/software and financial services industries. He also has considerable experience in intellectual property asset management and licensing, having assisted numerous clients to develop and implement strategies to acquire, protect, enforce, license and commercialize various forms of intellectual property.

"We are very fortunate to have an IP lawyer of Richard’s stature to serve our clients and lead our global practice,” said Creighton Condon, Shearman & Sterling's senior partner. “Richard is, first and foremost, a hands-on IP lawyer who has played a critical role in many transactions. He is also an acknowledged thought leader within the industry.”

A highly visible speaker and writer on IP topics, Hsu is widely known for his unique “Hsutube” videos which creatively and comprehensively describe IP-related matters. Among the topics Hsu has covered are “Handling IP Assets in an M&A Transaction,” “IP Ownership in Joint Development,” and “Assignment in a Change of Control.”

"It is a great honor for me to take on this new role for a firm like Shearman & Sterling, which is so prominent in the M&A world,” Hsu said. “In today’s complex corporate transactions, the protection or seamless transfer of intellectual property rights is absolutely critical. I look forward to leading our global practice and partnering with my outstanding colleagues to serve the needs of our clients.”

Shearman & Sterling’s Intellectual Property Transactions practice counsels clients on intellectual property issues arising in all types of corporate and financial transactions. The practice also has considerable experience advising multinational companies on the intellectual property and related regulatory issues inherent in operating in multiple jurisdictions. A particular focus in this area is strategic advice relating to prosecution and management of global IP portfolios.
