Shearman & Sterling Antitrust partner James Webber has been listed as one of The Lawyer's Hot 100 for 2022. The Lawyer Hot 100 is an annual report identifying the most innovative and creative lawyers in the UK for the past year.
The Lawyer notes that James first came to prominence for his work for BMI Healthcare in the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) investigation into private healthcare back in 2014. His efforts then resulted in the first blocking minority in a CMA market investigation.
More recently he is recognized is his work for ViacomCBS on the launch of a streaming platform, SkyShowtime, in a joint venture with Comcast and his work on the challenging $2bn sale of ViacomCBS’ publishing business, Simon & Schuster, to Penguin Random House.
James has also been heavily involved in the development of the UK’s new subsidy control regime with the Subsidy Control Bill largely following the model he proposed. His intervention, alongside George Peretz QC of Monckton Chambers has been highly influential in policy discussions around renegotiation of the Northern Ireland protocol.
The Lawyer’s annual Hot 100 list is compiled following extensive research into candidates’ client work and contribution to their firms, companies, and the wider legal profession.
