Asia Regional Managing Partner and Head of Greater China Lorna Chen, partner Anil Motwani (Hong Kong-Investment Funds) and counsel Jieni Ji (Hong Kong-Litigation) presented at a webinar titled “Regulatory Update in Hong Kong and the United States,” co-hosted by Shearman & Sterling and the Hong Kong Venture Capital and Private Equity Association on September 5, 2023.

The webinar provided a timely update on key legal and regulatory developments in Hong Kong and the United States affecting financial institutions, including asset managers and institutional investors. In particular, Lorna, Anil and Jieni discussed the latest China-related sanction regimes, including U.S. President Biden’s new Executive Order on outbound investments. They shared their insight on new sanction regimes’ potential impacts on PE/VC investors and their portfolio companies in Asia, what PE/VC investors should expect in the near future, and how to navigate these compliance challenges and build resilience in the time of uncertainty. In addition, the speakers discussed recent regulatory trends in the areas of anti-corruption, cryptocurrency and digital assets (including Hong Kong’s enactment of a comprehensive licensing regime for crypto-exchanges) and private funds (including the SEC’s industry-altering reforms over how U.S.-advised private funds are managed and operated).
