Shearman & Sterling Hosts Screening of Girl Rising, Documentary on Power of Educating Girls

To commemorate International Women’s Day, Shearman & Sterling hosted the first of four screenings of Girl Rising, the groundbreaking documentary film that chronicles the power of girls’ education to change the world. The New York screening took place at The Times Center, and similar events will be hosted in Hong Kong, London and San Francisco.

The firm and its guests were joined by Kayce Freed Jennings, the film’s senior producer and founder of The Documentary Group, who shared insights about the making of Girl Rising and led an interactive discussion with the audience following the screening. The audience also heard remarks from Kristin Hetle, Director of Strategic Partnerships at UN Women, who discussed how to make a difference for women around the world.

The evening’s guests, many of whom were the children of clients and firm partners, were able to text their questions to Ms. Freed Jennings. An 11-year-old girl asked, “How do I arrange for a screening and fundraiser at my school?” and a 12-year-old inquired, “Was it difficult to find girls who would tell you their personal stories?” The abundance of questions received was a wonderful indication of how much the film resonated with kids and grownups alike.

“We are proud to make this film a centerpiece of our diversity program globally and to raise awareness about this important issue,” said Creighton Condon, the firm’s senior partner.

Donna Parisi, co-leader of Shearman & Sterling’s Asset Management practice and a member of the firm's women's committee, led the initiative to screen the film. In her remarks, she commented that “Shearman & Sterling has long embraced the importance of diversity and respect in the workplace. First, because it is the right thing to do and also, importantly, because it is good for business. Diversity of perspective, diversity of thought and diversity of approach make organizations stronger and better able to deliver value to their clients. Our global Girl Rising campaign is one of many programs at the firm that illustrate the tremendous value we place on diversity.”
