Overview

As Deputy General Counsel and Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer, Abbie Chessler is responsible for providing counsel to the Firm on internal legal matters relating to professional responsibility, risk management, governance, and compliance.

Prior to joining Shearman, Abbie served as the Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer at a leading global law firm based in New York, where she was a member of the Executive Director Group and was responsible for the Ethics and Compliance Department. Abbie was previously a litigation associate in the Securities Litigation practice at the same law firm, following a federal clerkship with the Honorable, F.A. Little, Jr. in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana. Abbie’s practice focused on the litigation of securities, derivative, M&A, and complex commercial matters in both federal and state trial and appellate courts. Abbie represented clients in connection with internal and regulatory investigations and counseled boards of directors, board committees and senior management with respect to securities, corporate governance, and regulatory issues. Abbie also spent five years as in-house litigation counsel at a global investment bank, where she advised the company’s various business lines and internal management on a wide range of issues, including corporate governance, securities, transactional, compliance, and employment matters.

Abbie received her J.D. from the University at Buffalo, where she was a Notes & Comment Editor of the Buffalo Law Review and the Executive Editor of the Buffalo Journal of International Law, and her B.A. from Barnard College of Columbia University. Abbie is admitted to practice in New York.
