James is a senior associate in the Litigation practice. His practice focuses on complex cross-border disputes, investigations and contentious regulatory matters. He also has an active advisory practice, including advising on restructuring and insolvency situations.
Experience
- A major global bank in a significant cross-border damages claim in the High Court and Competition Appeal Tribunal, relating to the widely-publicised alleged manipulation of the global FX markets between 2003-2013.
- Cyrus Capital in a complex contractual claim against another hedge fund in the Financial List of the High Court, arising in connection with a significant restructuring in the paper industry.
- Etihad Airways in a cross-border claim in the High Court and Court of Appeal, worth up to €2 billion, arising in connection with the high profile insolvency of Air Berlin.
- NatWest in relation to a €1.9 billion fraudulent misrepresentation claim in the High Court in connection with the widely-publicised alleged manipulation of EURIBOR.
- A global heavy-equipment supplier in highly complex €2 billion construction arbitration and related local litigation arising in connection with disputes in relation to two power station megaprojects in South Africa.
- An international investment bank in relation to a wide-ranging FCA enforcement action.
- The interests of around 11,000 bondholders in London Capital & Finance in connection with judicial review proceedings and other related disputes, in respect of a decision by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme not to compensate bondholders following LC&F’s high-prolife collapse into insolvency in 2019.
- A high profile tech company in relation to a serious and potentially high profile claim in defamation and malicious falsehood.
- A household U.S. corporate in connection with a contentious expert determination process arising from a contentious SPA closing statement process.
- A major overseas asset management company in connection with its performance of a complex asset support and restructuring agreement.
- An international corporate in relation to its GDPR obligations, in connection with a wholesale policy review.

- James has been on secondment to the in-house legal team of an international investment bank and has written for and contributed to a number of legal publications.
- James also has an active pro bono practice, including a working knowledge of international human rights and environmental law. James has acted for individuals as an advocate before the social entitlement tribunal and advises NGOs and other multilateral organisations on matters of human rights and environmental law.
