Shearman & Sterling Hosts 9th US & Mexico Real Estate Investment Summit

Shearman & Sterling’s Real Estate Group hosted the 9th U.S. & Mexico Real Estate Investment Summit on March 9, 2023 at its global headquarters in New York City at 599 Lexington Avenue. Attendees were welcomed by Malcolm Montgomery, Real Estate partner at Shearman & Sterling, and Jorge Islas, Consul General, Consulate General of Mexico in New York.

The event included five panels covering key topics in real estate investment, featuring subject-matter experts and industry leaders as speakers.

Overview of the 9th US & Mexico Real Estate Investment Summit

  • Panel 1 – Economic & Real Estate Market Outlook for the U.S., Mexico & the Globe
    The first panel centered on the recent evolution of the real estate market in the U.S. and Mexico; real estate asset classes and securities in North America; inflation, rates and implications for market caps and the real estate market; economic and political risk management; recession risk; and included an analysis of legal and regulatory developments.
    The panel was moderated by Kris Ferranti, Real Estate partner at Shearman & Sterling, and the panelists included Enrique Lavin, Managing Director & Country Head at PGIM Real Estate, Juan Carlos Mier y Terán, Head Real Estate at Banco Santander, Raúl Gallegos, Managing Director, Asset Management at Credit Suisse, and Susan L. Stupin, Co-Founder and Managing Director at Prescott Holdings LLC.
  • Panel 2 – Green/Sustainable Financing & ESG for Real Estate in the U.S. & Mexico
    The second panel centered on the rising tide of ESG goals for real estate companies; green bonds and sustainable financings; ESG disclosure, ratings and standards; and included an analysis by real estate market sector.
    The panel was moderated by Carlos Valverde, Vice President Real Estate Development at Silverstein, and the panelists included Liliana Bernardis, Principal at MVE Architects Mexico City, Francisco Martin del Campo, Founder at Arquitectoma, Reshma Kulkarni, Associate Director at Sustainable Fitch, and Robert White, Head of Green and Sustainable Hub Americas at Natixis.
  • Panel 3 – Reshoring & Nearshoring: Implications for Industrial & Logistics Real Estate in the U.S. & Mexico
    The third panel centered on supply chain reconfiguration; USMCA implementation; logistic infrastructure/ border, inland ports, distribution centers; trends in nearshoring/ potential benefited sectors and geographies in Mexico; and included an analysis of regulatory, economic and political factors.
    The panel was moderated by Rafael Villamar-Ramos, Partner at Sanchez Devanny, and the panelists included Barbara Ochoa, CEO of Grupo IGS, Guillermo Espinosa Armendáriz, Real Estate Solutions at DHL Supply Chain México, Barnaby Fletcher, Director, Global Risk Analysis Group at Control Risks, and Cesar Remis, General Director and partner at Trade Envoy.
  • Panel 4 – Tech Innovation Proptech & Buildtech
    The forth panel centered on big data in the real estate sector; trends in proptech and buildtech: U.S. and Latin America Unicorns and new players; investing in proptech and buildtech; and on the potential impact of AI-powered technologies.
    The panel was moderated by Jorge González Soler, Cloud Territory Manager, Digital Natives at Google, and the panelists included Aaron Kraig, Co-Founder & CEO of eHubs, Adam Stark, Co-Founder of Jet Build, Chris Pyke, Senior Vice President at ArcSkoru, and Eoin Kiely, Associate Director, BIM and Technology at Turner & Townsend.
  • Panel 5 – Inroads for Mexican Capital & Development in the U.S. Real Estate Market
    The last panel centered on an analysis of the U.S. real estate market by sector, geography and outlook; opportunities for foreign direct investment in U.S. real estate; experience of Mexican pioneers in the U.S. real estate sector; the market for investments in U.S. real estate: foreign and local funds, traditional U.S. investment vehicles; and on legal and regulatory considerations.
    The panel was moderated by Jonathan Newman, partner at Shearman & Sterling, and the panelists included Tal Peri, Head of U.S. East Coast & Latam Union Investment Real Estate, Gustavo Tomé, CEO and Founder of Skyway Equities, and Kent M. Swig, President of Swig Equities.
