Shearman & Sterling hosted the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration’s 8th Annual Current Trends in Mining Finance Conference on May 8-11 in our New York office.  

The event featured more than 40 panels, keynote speakers and workshops on trends and issues affecting financing and the raising of capital for investment in the global mining industry. Keynote speakers included Balfour Holdings CEO Douglas Silver, McEwen Mining Chairman Rob McEwen, Government of Quebec Associate Deputy Minister of Mines Nathalie Camden and Ontario Minister of Mines, the Honorable George Pirie.

Panel topics included trends in M&A and consolidation, the managing of construction risk, trends and challenges in finance, government incentives, issues of exploration and early-stage development, the impact of climate change on mining operations, private equity investments in the mining sector and an examination of the regulatory landscape.
