Shearman & Sterling Antitrust Practice Selected as a Law360 Practice Group of the Year

Shearman & Sterling’s Antitrust practice has been recognized by Law360 as a “Practice Group of the Year” in the Competition/Antitrust category. Winning practice groups are selected based on the breadth and significance of the matters highlighted and the complexity of the firm’s work during the past year.

The antitrust practice was recognized for its work on a variety of matters, including:

  • 1-800 Contacts on its important victory in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, which vacated and dismissed a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Order that barred 1-800 Contacts from enforcing certain trademark settlement agreements pertaining to internet search advertising.
  • JetBlue in obtaining voluntarily dismissal with prejudice of antitrust litigation lawsuit brought by an online travel agent, in New York federal court.
  • SS&C Technologies, leading fintech software company in in two major litigation matters. One case against a competitor in providing technology services in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. In another case in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, the court rejected a similar monopolization claim that alleged SS&C’s termination of a software license was anticompetitive.
  • ViacomCBS on its definitive agreement to sell its publishing business Simon & Schuster to Penguin Random House, a wholly owned subsidiary of Bertelsmann SE in a transaction valued at $2.18 billion.

In addition, the firm’s lawyers won significant antitrust class action victories for clients such as ICE Benchmark Administration, Bank of America, BNP Paribas and others over the same period related to matters such as LIBOR, corporate and U.S. Treasury bond markets. The Antitrust practice is a key part of Shearman & Sterling’s growing disputes offering. Last year, the Firm announced the return of Ryan Shores as an antitrust and litigation partner in Washington, D.C. Additionally, Matt Modell and Mark Steenson were promoted to antitrust counsel in our Washington, D.C. and London offices, respectively.
