Counsel Grissel Mercado (New York-Capital Markets) participated as a panelist on February 24 at the Latin American Business Conference, sponsored by the Latin American Business Associations (LABA) of NYU Stern and Columbia Business School. For more than 10 years, the conference has been one of the most anticipated forums to discuss the pressing issues, challenges and achievements of the region.
The event brought together current and rising leaders from Latin America in public policy, tech and social entrepreneurship who spoke in a series of panels about the current reality of social change and business in the region. As one of the leaders, Ms. Mercado gave an overview of her practice and, together with Marcio Fortes, the former president of BNDES, discussed the role development banks have played in fostering economic development and bringing services to the more marginalized sectors of Latin American countries. They also spoke about the differences between traditional sources of lending and more innovative fintech solutions, such as Avante, a microfinance startup in Brazil.
