Partner Alexandro M. Padrés (New York-Project Development & Finance) moderated a discussion with Roque Benavides, chairman of the Board of Directors of Compañía de Minas Buenaventura, about the state of Peru’s mining industry and the outlook for investment there. The presentation was followed by an active question and answer session regarding Peru’s potential and challenges for 2020. The event was held on March 4 at Shearman & Sterling’s offices in New York.
Peru, located in one of the world’s most prolific polymetallic belts, is one of the best mining destinations in Latin America, according to Standard & Poor’s. The mining industry contributes more than 10 percent of the country’s GDP and almost 62 percent of their exports value. In 2018, it captured 10 percent of the global mining exploration budget.
