Shearman & Sterling Expands Global Financial Regulatory Practice with Return of Timothy Byrne in New York

Global law firm Shearman & Sterling has bolstered its global financial regulatory practice with the addition of Timothy Byrne, who rejoins the firm as counsel in the firm’s New York office.

Mr. Byrne comes to the firm from Cleary Gottlieb, where his practice focused on US banking regulation. He has represented both US and non-US financial institutions on the bank regulatory aspects of a wide range of financial products and corporate transactions. Earlier in his career, Mr. Byrne worked as a staff attorney with the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, DC and as Senior Counsel with Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc. responsible for US bank regulatory matters. Acknowledged by Legal 500 and Chambers USA in financial services, he was also a Shearman & Sterling associate from 1995-1997.

“Tim is extremely well known in US and global banking circles and is highly regarded by his clients,” said Barnabas Reynolds, a Shearman & Sterling partner in London and head of the firm’s global financial regulatory practice. “With the combination of continued regulatory focus by US and global agencies and our growing suite of software-based products, including the Volcker Assistant, Tim’s arrival is integral to our continued client service in this important area.”

Mr. Byrne’s return to Shearman & Sterling follows the recent addition of Reena Agrawal Sahni as a partner in New York. Ms. Sahni advises clients in the area of bank regulation, bank insolvency, and bank capital markets transactions, including Dodd-Frank Act regulatory reform implementation for US and non-US banks and other financial institutions. She has also advised financial institutions and trade associations on bank resolution, recovery, and resolution planning and cross-border bank resolution issues. Ms. Sahni also served as a Senior Attorney for the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
