Banifatemi Featured in 'Voice of Experience' Profile on The Glass Hammer

Shearman & Sterling’s Yas Banifatemi, a Paris-based partner in the International Arbitration Group and leader of the firm’s Public International Law practice, was featured as a "Voice of Experience" on The Glass Hammer, an online community designed for women executives in financial services, law and business.

The profile talks about Banifatemi’s trailblazing career at Shearman & Sterling. During her tenure at the firm, she has become a highly acclaimed lawyer in the male-dominated arbitration field. Although women are better represented in the field today than when she first started practicing almost 18 years ago, they are still lacking in leadership roles. Banifatemi urges women to find ways to distinguish themselves to overcome this obstacle. “My advice to anyone considering practicing in the areas of public international law or arbitration is to gain as much exposure as possible, get the best training, education, and experience, and develop your own voice and show how you can make a difference,” she says. Banifatemi is one of two women who serve on the firm’s nine-member Policy Committee. She was also recently appointed co-leader of the firm’s Energy Group.

Banifatemi is honored to have been involved in a number of high-profile cases, including the representation of the majority shareholders of the former Yukos Oil Company in a landmark case against the Russian Federation, in which the firm secured a $50 billion award for its clients -- the largest amount ever awarded in an arbitration case. “I really feel privileged,” Banifatemi says, “because over the last 17 years I have had the opportunity to work on some of the most fascinating international disputes.”
