Former partner Hans H. Angermueller, 90, of Westerly, RI, passed away on July 11 at Westerly Hospital.

Born on October 7, 1924 in Neudorf, Czechoslovakia, Angermueller joined Shearman & Sterling as an associate in 1950 after graduating from Harvard Law School and became a partner in 1959. With broad experience in domestic and international banking and financial transactions, he specialized in U.S. banking law and regulation, financial service regulatory and legislative reform, and structuring international financial transactions. He left the firm in 1973 to serve as General Counsel of Citicorp/Citibank and then as Vice Chairman, and rejoined the firm as Of Counsel in 1990.

Upon Angermueller’s return to the firm in 1990, former Senior Partner Robert Carswell commented, “With the increasing globalization of commercial and financial markets, Hans’ return to the firm could not be more opportune…. His past association with the major banking industry trade associations as well as his acquaintance with the principal bank regulators and with members of Congress should prove helpful to our clients as they adapt to the rapidly changing regulatory environment.”

Creighton Condon, the firm’s current Senior Partner, noted, “Hans was held in great esteem by the banking community and his peers throughout the firm. He was at the forefront of the financial services deregulation movement and considered a leading expert in this area.”

Angermueller was predeceased by his wife, Katherine L. (Alberti) Angermueller on December 21, 2013. He is survived by his son, Hans P. Angermueller, his daughter, Katherine Knetzger, his daughter, Marianne Lynner, his son, Victor Angermueller and his daughter, Susan Twombly.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at the Church of Saint Clare, 62 Crandall Avenue, Misquamicut, RI 02891 on Friday, July 17 at 11 a.m. Funeral services are under the direction of Rushlow-Iacoi Funeral Home & Crematory, 64 Friendship Street, Westerly, RI 02891.
